Nita Ambani named as co-chair for Jio MAMI film festival
Mumbai: Nita Ambani, founder and chairperson of Reliance Foundation was on Wednesday announced the co-chair of the board of trustees of the Mumbai Academy of Moving Image (MAMI) film festival in Mumbai.
“I am honoured with the appointment and the faith that the MAMI Board of Trustees has reposed in me. I thank them for inviting me to be a part of this movement that will showcase the best of Indian and world cinema.” Ambani said in a press statement after the Jio MAMI trophy for 2015 was also unveiled.
“Jio MAMI deserves to be recognised as one of the best film festivals in the world. We are convinced that Jio will have a lot to do with films, and films will have a lot to do with Jio,” added Ambani , who is also the chairperson of IMG-Reliance, the stakeholders of the ongoing ISL.
The announcement was made in the presence of members of the Board of Trustees of MAMI that included Kiran Rao, Anupama Chopra, Dibakar Banerjee and Vishal Bhardwaj, among others.
"Our aim is to create a movie-soaked week in which you can see the best of Indian and international cinema. We want to foster a cultural exchange, enable conversations and shape a cinematic sensibility,” said Anupama Chopra, the Festival Director for 17th Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival.
"We are here because of the generosity of many people. Foremost among them is Jio and our associate sponsor – STAR India. And I also want to thank our third partner – the Government of Maharashtra," Chopra added.
This year's edition of the film festival will also feature 'Half Ticket', a section specially crafted for children. It will include live action, animation, documentary features and shorts from across the world and will compete for the children's jury awards. Children will also learn filmmaking from renowned directors and writers at a special interactive session at the festival.
Along with co-chairs, Nita Ambani and Kiran Rao and festival director Anupama Chopra, the members of the new Board of Trustees of MAMI include Farhan Akhtar, Zoya Akhtar, Karan Johar, Vishal Bharadwaj, Vikramaditya Motwane, Dibakar Banerjee, Riteish Deshmukh and Deepika Padukone.
Film industry stalwarts headed by late Hrishikesh Mukherjee had founded the Mumbai Academy of Moving Image (MAMI) in 1997 as a not-for-profit trust. MAMI has been organising the festival for the last 16 years and aims to foster a climate of good cinema.
The upcoming 17th Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival is scheduled to be held from 29th October to 5th November, 2015.
