According to reports published in Forbes, prosecutors portrayed the brothers as cold-blooded killers motivated by a desire to inherit their family fortune, while the defense argued that Lyle and Erik were victims of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse by their parents.
Based on the horrific true events the series explores the crime committed by the infamous Menendez brothers. According to reports published in Time, Lyle and Erik, the real-life brothers who were convicted in 1996 of the brutal 1989 murders of their parents, entertainment executive Jose Menendez (Javier Bardem) and his wife, Mary Louise “Kitty” Menendez (Chloë Sevigny).
How did it all happen?
On the evening of August 20, 1989, Jose and Kitty Menendez were found shot multiple times at close range in the family room of their Beverly Hills mansion. Due to the brutal nature of the killings, police initially suspected mob involvement. But later it was found that it was their two sons who actually killed their parents. Lyle then 21 years old called the police that someone had killed his parents. He and brother Erik told police that they were out and when they came back home, they found their parents shot dead.
According to the Netflix ’s show, six months after the murders, authorities received a tip from Judalon Smyth, who was the mistress of Erik’s psychologist, Jerome Oziel. Time.com reported that Smyth told police that Erik confessed to the killings in therapy, and there were audiotape records of it.
