Some advertisements have pretty cringe worthy content, but this new advertisement for Kenwood washing machines featuring Nawazuddin Siddiqui seems to have hit a new sexism low. [caption id=“attachment_3443880” align=“alignleft” width=“380”] A still from the video[/caption] The ad is a part of a series that Kenwood Pakistan got Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Aisha Khan on board for. The two actors play a married couple and the ads so far seemed fine, until this one. This ad begins with a group of four friends sitting in a living room and laughing. Siddiqui who plays the lead, tells his friends the story of his fight with his wife, munching on popcorn all the while. His dialogues include, ‘she misbehaved again’ and ‘she was getting loud’ and then the punchline, ‘mera haath utt gaya, uski dhulayi ki.’ Here the play is on the word ‘dhulayi’ which hear refers beating up and can also refer to washing. Then the friends scare him into believing his wife is home, which makes Siddiqui jump from his seat. Now the ad cuts to a Kenwood washing machine and the narrator informs us that ‘Kenwood kare aapke kadpe ki woh dhulai jo sab mane.’ The advertisement first went viral when it was posted on a Facebook page called Whatsapp Videos, where the users commented on the sinister nature of the ad which seems to make fun of domestic abuse.
Since then, Kenwood has issued an apology and explained that the ad was leaked before its time, reports Dawn. The official apology also states that they know that their ‘judgment was flawed’ and that they failed to consider the ad ‘in the light of view that many people have pointed out.’ Here’s the said ad:
While Nawazuddin Siddiqui has always wowed us with his unusal choice of roles, we cannot help but wonder, what made him sign on this series of ads?
