Filmmaker Chintan Sarda’s short film, The Broken Table, starring Naseeruddin Shah and Rasika Dugal, has recently qualified for the Oscars in the Live-action short film category. Thus, it is now a step closer at winning the Oscar. Here’s how: The Broken Table recently won in the Indian Competition Section at the Bengaluru International Short Film Festival. What is The Bengaluru International Short Film Festival? The winning films from the Indian and International competition sections are automatically eligible for consideration in the Live-Action Short Film Category of the Academy Awards, without standard theatrical run, provided the film complies with the stringent Academy rules. Director reacts Speaking to Times of India, the filmmaker who has crafted this short, said, “While this win is a great beginning, I am feeling a bit intimidated too about the whole campaign we need to undertake now. We are up against some of the best short films in the world, including a Wes Anderson project and films backed by big Hollywood stars. We need to ensure that the film gets good visibility in the coming days. If we can make it to the shortlist, it will be a huge moment for us.” On working with Naseeruddin Shah The Broken Table is about a caregiver (played by Rasika) who spends a turbulent day with an Alzheimer’s patient (played by Naseeruddin Shah). A friend of mine had told me about an old man suffering from Alzheimer’s, who would forget that his wife was no more. He would re-live the pain daily and this heartbreaking story stayed with me. The idea for this film came from that incident and I remembered it while co-writing the project with my friend Vikram Gupta. I have known Rasika for a few years and she helped me in reaching out to Naseeruddin Shah. Working with him was on my bucket list and both of them were fabulous to work with.
