According to the Indian Express, Thakkar left his Mulund flat on 31 December, 2016, to watch Star Wars: The Force Awakens at a theater. He had borrowed Rs. 500 from his mother and also asked her to join him, but she declined. Later that night, he texted his father saying, "I am going to a party. See you tomorrow." The next morning, Thakkar went missing. It has been three years but the case has not progressed an inch.

The report further mentions that Thakkar was last spotted by his girlfriend on Ghodbunder Road at 11.45 am on 1 January, as he hailed an auto rickshaw to Andheri for a shoot. He also posted a Facebook post at 12.10 pm, wishing a ‘Happy New Year’.

Ever since his disappearance, the cops stated that the family didn’t receive any ransom call. Thakkar's phone was switched off and there were no activities in his bank account. Also, there are no missing reports of any person matching his identity.

Three months before his disappearance, Thakkar had run into trouble. The family suspects it to be the reason of his disappearance. In October 2015, his then girlfriend, also a TV actor, had lodged a complaint of rape and assault against him. According to Durga, Vishal's mother, the two had a minor fight which was later resolved. The actor even withdrew her compliant. Eight months ago, she was found dead in her Kandivali flat due to cardiac arrest.

Vishal Thakkar worked in Tango Charlie which was released in 2005. Other than that, he has worked in television shows like Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah, Veer Shivaji, and Thapki Pyar Ki.
