'MS Dhoni: The Untold Story' trailer: Sushant Singh Rajput is amazing, story is cliched

... but Mahendra Singh Dhoni creates cliches.

That's the first feeling you get when you watch the MS Dhoni: The Untold Story trailer, which has been a long time coming. You feel like all the dramatic elements, and the heavy background score that indicates this film to be a magnum opus, are justified.

We know that Sushant Singh Rajput has completely submerged himself into this film, and you can see that in his performance: the way he walks, the way he speaks, his on-pitch mannerisms, all of it. If one didn't know he was an actor, he could easily have been mistaken for a Dhoni lookalike.

The MS Dhoni trailer takes us back to Dhoni's childhood and how he juggled his studies with his passion for cricket.

How he was a ticket collector in Ranchi, to how he became the captain of the Indian team. It's all there, and you feel gooseflesh while seeing it unveil in front of your eyes.

This trailer will be even more special for those of us, who watched cricket before Dhoni came into the picture, and for the longest time knew him to be "that long-haired guy".

Nostalgia will strike you hard. Sushant Singh Rajput nails all the phases in all earnestness. Infact, suffice it to say this is probably his most challenging but his most intense role.

At the trailer launch in Jalandar, director of the film Neeraj Pandey (of A Wednesday, Baby and Special 26 fame) said, "I know Dhoni from his struggling days. It's rare for someone to remain so humble even after achieving so much success. I met Dhoni and offered to make film on his life and he immediately agreed."

Through the three minute long trailer, Sushant manages to contain both Dhoni's humility and his rightful authoritativeness as the captain. For a film that was shot over months, but graphs decades in its story, Sushant's performance travels through the years as well.

Essentially, he is the best thing about the trailer. So much so, that you don't pay attention to anything else. You ignore the loud background music, the over-dramatic setting, the underplaying of other actors, because Sushant steals away all your attention.

MS Dhoni: The Untold Story also stars Bhumika Chawla as Dhoni's sister, Anupam Kher as his father and Kiara Advani as Dhoni's wife Sakshi Dhoni.

The film is produced by Fox Star Studios and Inspired Entertainment, and will hit  theatres on 30 September.
