Though Jennifer Lawrence’s Mother! has been billed as a psychological horror-thriller, its trailer will probably confuse you more than creep you out. In it, Lawrence and her on-screen husband Javier Bardem move into a decrepit-looking house that she ‘brings to life’, much to Bardem’s comfort. Soon, it turns into a BnB of sorts for questionable characters, who seem to haunt Lawrence but not her husband, who actually seems welcoming of them. The “>teaser of the film was an equally mysterious 40 second-long video, where we saw Lawrence dressed in a white gown, float across her desolate house. Through dialogues, we were told that a stranger comes to this house, looking for a room, but we are not shown his face. What follows is Lawrence screaming and calling the stranger insane and a murderer. We also see a woman being fed upon in the manner that vampires do, and a man walking into fire. The trailer of the film builds on this gore, and we see drops of blood and bloodied objects around the house. Although not much is known about the film, it is said that the plot mainly centers on a couple, whose otherwise peaceful life is disrupted by the arrival of strangers who seem to have been invited by her husband. One of the posters of the film is enough to send shivers down your spine. It is a fairy tale-themed painting of Lawrence, who wears a serene expression and holds a bleeding human heart in her hands. It’s tough to tell who will be the antagonist of this film, at this point.

Aronofsky retweeted a Lawrence fan account which put out a tweet saying that in the poster, two characters are reflected in Lawrence’s eyes. He also revealed that it has several Easter eggs; upon looking closely, you’ll find several clues, such as a character’s face, lettering and a jewelry box of sorts. Mother! is directed by Darren Aronofsky, the maker of films such as The Black Swan and Requiem for a Dream. The film also stars Michelle Pfeiffer, Ed Harris, Domhnall Gleeson, and Kristen Wiig. Mother! is slated to release on 15 September. It will premier at the Venice Film Festival. Watch the trailer here:
