Martin Scorsese reveals he was inspired by Satyajit Ray's Pather Panchali: 'Cinema opened to me'

Martin Scorsese has carved a niche for himself with his work in projects such as Taxi Driver, Mean Streets and Shutter Island. Up next, his Western crime drama, Killers of the Flower Moon starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro and Lily Gladstone will be reaching the cinema halls soon. During a recent interaction with PTI, Martin Scorsese shared titbits from his early days of cinema. He also talked about Satyajit Ray’s cult classic Pather Panchali.   Martin Scorsese on Satyajit Ray’s Pather Panchali When asked if his new movie Killers of the Flower Moon will resonate in countries such as India with a colonial past, Martin Scorsese revealed that 1955 Satyajit Ray’s directorial Pather Panchali opened many different worlds for him. He said, “I wonder what it would be like to be a colonised person and a wide part of a colonised world that you live in.” The director further added that he came to know about the Indian culture after seeing Jean Renoir’s 1951 Kolkata-set The River, however, Pather Panchali became a turning point for him. “I happened to love The River but it is seen through the prism of another culture,” he added.

Martin Scorsese also disclosed that he has always been interested in different cultures and what people think in other parts of the world. He also revealed that this philosophy inspired him to make changes to the script of his next, Killers of the Flower Moon. All About Killers of the Flower Moon The story Killers of the Flowers Moon is based on the book of the same name by David Grann. It talks about the formation of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and how it investigated a series of murders.   Killers of the Flower Moon premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. Now, it is gearing to reach the theatres on 20 October. The project will be released in India on 27 October.   Bankrolled by the production banners Apple Studios in association with Imperative Entertainment, Sikelia Productions, and Appian Way Productions, the movie also features Jesse Plemons, Tantoo Cardinal, John Lithgow, Brendan Fraser, Cara Jade, JaNae Collins,  Jillian Dion and Jason Isbell in supporting roles.
