There’s always been something a little alien about Lady Gaga - with her meat dresses and her tendency to hatch out of eggs at music award shows. And her latest announcement can be interpreted as either Gaga returning to where she came from, or as a publicity stunt. According to an article published in US Weekly, Lady Gaga is planning to be the first artist to sing in space. The singer is one of the many celebrities who have purchased a ticket aboard Virgin Atlantic’s commercial flights to space, scheduled to begin next year. Lady Gaga will reportedly blast off in a Virgin Galactic ship and belt out a single track during the Zero G Colony high-tech musical festival in New Mexico. Gaga’s performance will take place during the third day at the festival, at dawn. “She has to do a month of vocal training because of the atmosphere,” a source said to US Weekly. 1. Is she really the first to sing in space? Gaga might not be the first singer in space, though, as some have pointed out. Astronaut Chris Hadfield, famously sang Space Oddity aboard the International Space Station in March this year. 2. Will Beiber belt out Baby to beat Gaga? Another point raised by Space.com managing editor Tariq Malik in this interview with Vanity Fair is that other singers such as Beyonce and Justin Beiber have purchased tickets as well - so she might have some stiff competition from other earthlings. “I think Beyoncé and Justin Bieber said they wanted to record a music video too, and this was years ago that they bought their [Virgin Galactic] tickets. I’m not sure who’s ahead of who in the line,” said Malik. 3. Will Lady Gaga throw up in the middle of her song? Malik also pointed out that Gaga might face some difficulties - space sickness for one. “Once she gets up into space, gravity drops away, and it can be really disorienting… She’ll have to prepare for space sickness because she won’t want to sing if she’s throwing up all of the time,” said Malik. 4. What song should she sing? Another question is: what will Lady Gaga sing? It would be a great way to announce a new single, but in case she goes for a cover, Elton John’s Rocket Man is a classic. 5. What will she wear? Gaga’s costume changes might require more effort than they do on Earth. “Virgin Galactic does have people designing their space suits,” says Malik. “I would imagine there might be some room for personal embellishments, like a patch or maybe some color or something like that. She would find that out closer to launch.”
