'Kya Kool Hai Hum 3' vs 'Airlift': Trade experts dissect this week's releases
This week in the theatres we get an amazingly polarized scenario. On the one end there is the hard-hitting political drama Airlift, which attempts to tell the based-in-truth, heroic rescue operations of Indians stranded in Kuwait after Saddam Hussain’s invasion.
On the other end is the sex comedy Kya Kool Hain Hum 3, filled with innuendos and crude jokes, claiming the attention of a much younger audience than the one that would traditionally favour Airlift.
Trade analyst Komal Nahata says, “Both films will open well. Airlift promos have been loved by one and all. Kya Kool Hain Hum 3 is a film in the KKHH brand. Also, its trailers have been found interesting and very naughty.”
Remarks another trade pundit, Atul Mohan, “Both films are different from each other. One a patriotic and other a roller-coaster ride for youngsters. Airlift deserves a tax-free status, and that too from day one. As for Kya Kool Hain Hum 3 the youngsters were starved of adult comedies for long time and they will lap this one instantly. Airlift will also do well as we haven't seen a patriotic film based on real incident from long. A great week to watch out for.”
However Anil Thadani, a leading Mumbai distributor, feels too much is made of the whole battle between the two films this week. “Calling it a clash would be wrong. Two movies do easily release within the same week until and unless each one of the two films requires over 4000 screens. In this case neither requires as many as 15 to 20 shows in each multiplex.”
Airlift director Raja Krishna Menon feels no threat from the other film. “The two belong to very different genres and the box office is big enough for both films to do well. I wish Kya Kool Hain Hum 3 the very best of luck," says Menon.
