'Kooke Kawn': New song from Sridevi's MOM is a disappointment from AR Rahman
Ravi Udyawar's upcoming revenge thriller MOM has gained traction for the exemplary acting of Sridevi and the intriguing look of Nawazuddin Siddiqui. But one quarter, where it should be commanding attention, is its music. The soundtrack has been composed by two time Academy Award winning composer AR Rahman.
However, the latest song from MOM, 'Kooke Kawn', explains why music will not be a highlight of the film. In terms of music and singing, the song is a disappointment given the powerhouses of talent Rahman and vocalist Sukhwinder Singh are.
Irshad Kamil's lyrics, which are confined to a recurrent chorus, still stand out because of the air that it adds to the overall feel of the song.
'Kooke Kawn' has been designed as a song that is more of a bad omen. While it is a party song, i has a sense of foreboding that all is not right. Towards the end of the song, when Sridevi comes looking for her daughter in the party, all the harsh caws of crows, which are considered a bad omen, start making sense.
But despite the ideation, the song falls flat as far as the music is concerned. While it may carry forward the narrative, there was no need for the makers to push it out as part of promotions.
MOM also stars Akshaye Khanna. It is co-produced by Zee Studio, MAD Films, Third Eye Pictures and Boney Kapoor's Sridevi Productions. It is slated to release on 7 July.
