Kim Kardashian slammed by PETA for gifting puppies to her children on Christmas: 'Puppies are not plushies'

Kim Kardashian is facing criticism from animal rights group PETA after gifting her four children live puppies for Christmas, a gesture that the organisation says sends the wrong message about animals and responsible pet ownership.

The reality star and entrepreneur shared videos and photos of her children’s delighted reactions as they met the new furry additions to the family, but those posts quickly drew contrasting responses online when PETA weighed in. Ingrid Newkirk, the founder of the organisation, told the Daily Mail Sunday, “Puppies are not plushies". She said it was a “damn shame” that Kim missed the chance to be a spokesperson for shelter pups.

Kim’s Christmas surprise featured multiple puppies gifted to her children, North, Saint, Chicago and Psalm, who appeared overjoyed in the footage. The star’s posts showcased the family’s holiday festivities and the children’s excited reactions as they welcomed the new pets. However, animal activists argued that giving live animals as presents can inadvertently promote impulsive decisions without considering the long-term commitment required for pet care.

PETA’s statement highlighted concerns that gifting animals can treat them like commodities rather than living beings with needs and emotional well-being. “Pets are lifelong companions — not seasonal playthings,” Newkirk said, calling on Kardashian and her followers to prioritise adoption, proper training, and responsible care when welcoming animals into a home.

Supporters of Kardashian, including many fans on social media, defended her, noting that she and her family have a history of caring for animals and that the children were raised in an environment committed to their well-being. Some followers pointed out that the Kardashians are experienced pet owners who understand the responsibilities involved, adding that “the puppies will be loved and well cared for.”

Kim Kardashian has not publicly responded to PETA’s comments, but the controversy highlights the broader discussion around how society values and treats companion animals, especially in moments meant to be joyful.
