Kevin Spacey to be replaced by Christopher Plummer in Ridley Scott's film All the Money in the World

After Sony Pictures pulled the Ridley Scott film All the Money in the World from its AFI Fest premiere following the sexual misconduct allegations made against co-star Kevin Spacey, the studio is all set to re-shoot scenes starring Spacey with another actor. According to an exclusive report by Deadline, Christopher Plummer has been roped in to replace Spacey in the upcoming film. Director Scott along with Dan Friedkin, Bradley Thomas of Imperative Entertainment plan to keep the date of release of the film, i.e. 22 December, as it is. All the scenes that Spacey had shot with Mark Wahlberg and Michelle Williams will be shot again, this time with Plummer; the re-shoot schedule is expected to commence soon. Hence the makers feel its wise to re-shoot all his scenes; they will reportedly also rejig their marketing strategies with this new development, reports Deadline. In the wake of numerous instances of sexual misconduct by Hollywood honchos, this is indeed a bold and righteous move on the part of the All the Money in the World’s makers. Just recently, the whole creative force behind the critically acclaimed film Wind River — writer-director Taylor Sheridan, actors Jeremy Renner, Elizabeth Olsen and producers Basil Iwanyk, Matthew George — parted ways with The Weinstein Company after its co-chairman Harvey Weinstein was accused by a bevy of women of sexual assault and harassment. In a statement on 6 November, Sony’s TriStar Pictures said it was withdrawing the film from the Los Angeles festival because “it would be inappropriate to celebrate a gala at this difficult time.” It had been slated to be the festival’s closing night film on 16 November. Directed by Ridley Scott, All the Money in the World is one of the fall movie season’s more anticipated releases, with many expecting it to be a potential Oscar contender. In it, Spacey plays oil tycoon J Paul Getty. When his 16-year-old grandson is kidnapped, Getty refuses to pay the ransom. The boy’s mother (Michelle Williams) and Getty’s adviser (Mark Wahlberg) work to recapture him. TriStar said the film’s 22 December release date remains unchanged, a decision that for now preserves the awards-season position of All the Money in the World. “A film is not the work of one person. Netflix on 3 November cut ties with Spacey, the star of its hit drama series House of Cards. Production on its sixth season has been suspended indefinitely. The company also scuttled its Gore Vidal biopic, with Spacey starring as the author, even though it had just finished shooting. Star Trek actor Anthony Rapp last week claimed that Spacey made sexual advances against him in 1986, when he was 14. In the days since, numerous others have also come forward to make various allegations of sexual harassment and assault against Spacey. London police are reportedly investigating Spacey for a 2008 sexual assault. Spacey has not responded to the mounting allegations but apologized to Rapp for what he called “deeply inappropriate drunken behavior.” (With inputs from AP)
