YRF Entertainment made its foray into Hollywood with Cannes-opener Grace Of Monaco and while it wasn’t much of a critical or commercial success, this hasn’t deterred the company. Now on its agenda is a remake of Bollywood hit Kahaani, which brings the story back to full circle since Kahaani took plenty of inspiration from Taking Lives, starring Angelina Jolie. According to reports, the Vidya Balan-starrer which was directed by Sujoy Ghosh, is being remade in English for the Western audience by Niels Arden Oplev ( the director of the Swedish The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) and has been titled Deity. Playwright Jose Rivera, who had written the script of The Motorcycle Diaries, and Richard Regen, who had scripted Tehran, will be writing the screenplay. Talking about the remake, Ghosh said, “Years back, Aditya Chopra had said he wanted to make Kahaani for a global audience… I thought he was kidding. But obviously not." “Niels is the perfect director to transform the appeal of Kahaani to Deity,” said Uday Chopra, CEO of YRF Entertainment. “Niels has an elevated understanding of both international thrillers and strong female characters and his vision for capturing the vibrancy and energy of contemporary Kolkata will appeal to audiences in the US and worldwide.” Deity will be financed and produced by YRF Entertainment, with CEO Uday Chopra serving as Producer and Jonathan Reiman, Head of Production & Development, serving as Executive Producer. YRF’s upcoming projects include Amel’s adaptation of Chris Greenhalgh’s novel, Seducing Ingrid Bergman.
