'John Wick: Chapter 2' trailer: A refreshing neo-noir or just another sequel?
Going by the trailer, John Wick: Chapter 2 seems like one of those clueless sequels which merely banks on the past glory of their previous installment. The trailer does not add anything new to the franchise and might not grab many eyeballs, apart from of those who are die-hard fans of the first part.
John Wick released in 2014 and revolved around a retired hitman extremely vindictive of the theft of his vintage car and the killing of his puppy. He goes on to create havoc on the gang of three responsible for the two not-so-offensive offences and seeks retribution.
It was the no-so-offensive part that made the first part appealing — how a man could be so soft on the inside and so steely on the exterior that he goes on to unleash hell on the perpetrators who killed his dog and stole his car. Really?
The trailer of Chapter 2 begins on the same note. Wick is visiting the classy country of Rome and getting a suit stitched. As the camera faces his back and the tailor does the measurements, he responds to the tailor's polite questions in monosyllables. The next chain of shots sees him loading the gun and prepping up to create havoc yet again.
However, the graph dips down post that as he is just seen firing shots, screaming and dishing out done to death one-liners. The cliched background music does not help either. The only plus point about the trailer, if we judge it in isolation from its franchise, is how the director has juxtaposed the posh locales of Rome with the ensuing neo-noir action scenes of Wick, bringing his contrasting character to the forefront.
John Wick: Chapter 2 stars Keanu Reeves in the titular character and is directed by Chad Stahelski. It is slated to reelase on 10 February, 2017.
