In a first, new Power Rangers film to have LGBTQ superhero lead character

The film reboot of the children’s TV show Power Rangers, directed by Dean Israelite, has an LGBTQ lead character — a first for big-budget superhero films. In the second part of the movie, the lead characters learn that she is coming to terms with her sexual orientation when one of them assumes that she is having “boyfriend problems” in one scene, later learning that she’s actually having “girlfriend problems”. In an interview, the director of Power Rangers said, ““For Trini, really she’s questioning a lot about who she is. She hasn’t fully figured it out yet. I think what’s great about that scene and what that scene propels for the rest of the movie is, ‘That’s OK.’ The movie is saying, ‘That’s OK,’ and all of the kids have to own who they are and find their tribe.” In the 1990s, the actor who played the original blue ranger, David Yost, actually quit the show following sexual harassment because of his orientation. He praised the new film for its openness and said, “They really stepped up to the plate. I think so many people in the LGBTQI community are going to be excited to see that representation.” In the original Power Rangers series, the character was straight and was essayed by Thuy Trang. Power Rangers releases on 24 March, 2017. It stars Dacre Montgomery, Naomi Scott, RJ Cyler, Becky G, Ludi Lin, Bill Hader, Bryan Cranston and Elizabeth Banks.
