Suchitra Sen played the role of Roma Banerjee, a doctor who falls in love with her patient, in Harano Sur. It was one of the many films in which Sen acted opposite Uttam Kumar. The pair became Bengali cinema’s most beloved romantic pair. The music of the film by Hemanta Mukherjee became wildly popular and the film, inspired by the English film Random Harvest, was a super hit. Uttar Falguni is a Bengali drama directed by Ajit Sen, starring Suchitra Sen in a double role. Sen played both the central heroine Debjani and her daughter, Suparna. The film was remade in Hindi, as Mamta, in which Sen reprised her roles. Dharmendra and Ashok Kumar joined the cast for the Hindi film. A screengrab from the film.

Suchitra Sen delivered a heartwarming performance in the 1959 film, Deep Jwele Jaai. Based on a Bengali short story, Nurse Mitra, the story is about a nurse (played by Sen) who is used by a progressive psychiatrist to treat his patients to treat patients suffering from emotional trauma. In 1975 Hindi hit film Aandhi, Suchitra Sen played the role of Aarti, a politician’s daughter who, after a torrid affair and failed marriage with J.K. (Sanjeev Kumar), dedicates herself to her political career. Rumour had it that the movie was based on former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s personal life, even though there are obvious differences between Aarti and Gandhi.
