As per Variety, Elba said in an interview that the fifth season of the show will serve as a segue to movie version. He said,"Luther’ has all the ingredients to echo those classic [neo-noir] films of the 90s like Seven and Along Came a Spider, and I think what we would like to do is use that blueprint to create Luther the film.”

He further described the film adaptation of the show as it will be "more murder, more Volvos, more frowning Luther", adding that he the motive of the team is to take the show on an international platform.

Without divulging further details, Elba said that the film would have to be set in a city, one that is 'Gotham-esque' to create the required environment for the crimes to take place.

The fifth series comprising four episodes was announced on 12 June 2017 and filming started in early 2018. Luther season 5 is slated to premiere on 1 January, 2019.
