If you thought you were excited to see The Wolverine, get in line. The actor Hugh Jackman, blessed with the superpower of making weird and unflattering facial hair look weirdly flattering, says he’s been waiting for this film since the first time he played the character of Logan/Wolverine in Bryan Singer’s X-Men (2000). Speaking about The Wolverine, which he has co-produced and starred in, Jackman said, “I waited in a way 12 years for this chapter in this saga, for this samurai story. From the very first week I had on [the first] X-Men, I was reading this comic and producer Lauren Shuler Donner and I were saying, one day, hopefully we get to do this story.” Jackman has appeared as Wolverine numerous times since then and from the look of The Wolverine, it looks like the actor has at least one thing in common with the mutant hero he plays on screen: neither age. Wolverine’s characteristic furrowed brow and extended adamantine claws are in evidence and when you watch the fight sequence set on the Tokyo’s famous Bullet train, just keep in mind Jackman is 44 years old. You may now go weak around the knees. Directed by James Mangold, The Wolverine is set in Tokyo and based upon the 1982 comic series written by Chris Claremont and pencilled by Frank Miller. Speaking about his character, Jackman described Wolverine as “the ultimate outsider.” In a Tokyo full of samurai blades and suited henchmen, he’s all the more out of place. As if that wasn’t bad enough, there are people doing strapping him to chairs and doing experiments on him because they want his powers. Fortunately, none of this stops Logan from beating up the bad guys and occasionally losing his shirt, as is evident from the trailer. The Wolverine will release in India on July 26th.
