How Yami Gautam and Emraan Hashmi's 'Haq' refuses to play it safe, demands to be seen

The teaser of Haq is out, and Junglee Pictures makes its intent unmistakably clear this is not a film that plays safe. In today’s polarized climate, where conversations on faith, rights, and justice are often dodged, Haq chooses to confront them head-on.

Produced in association with Insomnia Films and Baweja Studios, Haq is inspired by the landmark Supreme Court case of Mohd. Ahmed Khan v. Shah Bano Begum. Based on journalist Jigna Vora’s book Bano: Bharat ki Beti, the film fictionalizes events from the 1980s, but the questions it raises remain just as urgent is justice equal for all?

STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD

The story follows Shazia Bano (Yami Gautam Dhar), who takes her husband Abbas (Emraan Hashmi) to court after he abandons her and their children. What begins as a private dispute transforms into a national flashpoint, with the courtroom becoming a battlefield of faith, law, and equality. The teaser captures this shift with raw intensity, showing a love story turning into a fight for justice.

Unlike preachy melodramas or simplistic narratives, Haq keeps its focus firmly on the ‘mudda’. Yami and Emraan step into two of their most layered roles yet, bringing to life characters who are both human and emblematic of larger societal debates. Even in its brief first look, the film signals it will not dilute its edge with distractions or gimmicks.

For Junglee Pictures, the studio behind fearless films like Raazi, Talvar, and Badhaai Do, Haq continues its legacy of stories that challenge convention and demand conversation. The teaser proves one thing: Haq will not whisper, it will not compromise it demands to be seen.

Haq is set to release in theatres on 7th November 2025, directed Suparn S Varma ( creator of Sirf Ek Bandaa Kaafi Hai, The Family Man, Rana Naidu), and written by Reshu Nath. Strengthening the talent roster of HAQ are actors par excellence Sheeba Chaddha, Danish Hussain, and Aseem Hattangady.
