How KV Anand's Kavan can be Vijay Sethupathi's big ticket to superstardom

Noted director KV Anand’s Kavan (Catapult) will be one of the first films aiming to make it big at Kollywood’s summer box-office. Anand is a director with a proven track record of hits like Ayan (Suriya), Ko (Jiiva) and Anegan (Dhanush). Kavan has Vijay Sethupathi in the lead along with veteran T Rajender, Madonna and Akash Deep Saigal. The film will release on March 31, and is produced by the biggest banner in Tamil cinema AGS Entertainment. The film is said to be a political thriller set against the media milieu.

The trailer of Kavan was an instant hit and is said to be dealing with contemporary political issues set against the backdrop of a news channel. Vijay Sethupathi will play a character modelled on Arnab Gowsami, who has a tussle with a corporate over a social issue related to women. There are rumours that the film is very similar to Anand’s earlier Ko, as it also had an underlining political theme. In the film Vijay Sethupathi plays a common man urged on by his mentor of sorts T Rajendar, with Madonna playing a reporter in the channel and hero’s love interest. He says:  “The protagonist in Ko was a press photographer, in Kavan he works in a television news channel. Kavan means catapult and here my hero is aiming at a particular target and how he does it forms the rest of the story, told with commercial packaging.” Another highlight is that KV Anand has replaced his regular music director Harris Jayaraj with the fast rising young Hip Hop Tamizha, who was in the forefront of the recent Jalikattu protest on Marina Beach. Kavan is Vijay Sethupathi’s big ticket to superstardom. If the film works at the box-office, the actor will go up the Kollywood ladder considerably and may be considered as a mass hero. Kalapathy S Agoharam, the producer of the film says: “Kavan is Vijay Sethupathi’s biggest project in his career. From a hero who has a Rs 12 Crore market value, this film will cost around Rs 18 Cr.  We didn’t want to compromise on the quality. I’m sure that his market will witness a rise after the release of the film.” Kavan is releasing worldwide on March 31 and a lot is riding on it for Kollywood, in search of its first super hit of the year.
