Happy Birthday Pancham-da: Our top 5 RD Burman picks

Music composer Amit Trivedi says his upcoming film Lootera’s music is a tribute to the legendary musician, RD Burman. Trivedi joins a long line of musicians following in the footsteps of Burman who have paid tribute (like Vishal Shekhar in Jhankaar Beats) or remixed his timeless tunes (think Himmesh Reshammiya). For an entire generation of music listeners and music composers a period of Bollywood’s music is defined by the melodies and rhythms of Burman. So, on Burman’s 74th birthday we bring you a pick of our five most favourite RD Burman songs: [caption id=“attachment_910853” align=“alignleft” width=“380”] Courtesy: ibn live Courtesy: ibn live[/caption] Pyar Dewana Hota Hai: Picturised on the Bollywood’s King Of Romance, Rajesh Khanna and Asha Parekh, all the songs of this 1970’s film, Kati Patang, became extremely popular and was also instrumental in the film’s success. This film was the beginning of RD Burman’s many popular songs.

Tere bina zindagi se koi: Penned by Gulzar, RD Burman weaved poetry into music and the product was this song of Aandhi (1975). Picturised on the lead characters of the film, played by Sanjeev Kumar and Suchitra Sen, the song brings out the yearning of the characters and the tragedy of circumstances that destiny delivered to them. It’s Bangla rendition Jete jete pothey holo deri was a rage in Bengal during the 70s.

Goom hai kisi ke pyaar mein: This magical romantic number by RD Burman featured in Manmohan Desai’s 1972 film, Raampur Ka Lakshman. The song was sung by Kishore Kumar and Lata and picturised on Randhir Kapoor and Rekha.

Mehbooba Mehbooba: This iconic peppy number from the epic Sholay was picturised on a gyrating Helen, and despite numerous remixes, the original still has everyone hooked. There have been several remixes of this song, one by Himesh Reshammiya too, but none of them have come close to the original.

Rim Jhim Gire Sawan: Picturised on Amitabh Bachchan and Moushumi Chatterjee, RD Burman keeps all the flavours of a Basu Chatterjee’s romance intact.
