Remembering Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan: Google celebrates the late king of 'Qawwali'

Google today is celebrating legendary Pakistani musician Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan who was born in Lyallpur (now Faisalbad) in the Punjab province of Pakistan in 1948. [caption id=“attachment_2466394” align=“alignleft” width=“380”] ![Google.](https://images.firstpost.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/nusrat-google.png) Google.[/caption] On his 67th birth anniversary Google has decided to honour this singer who popularised “Qawwali” music globally. The doodle is visible on its homepages in 6 countries- India, Pakistan, Japan, Sweden, Ghana, and Kenya. Khan was truly responsible for taking Qawwali music to the world stage and through his magnificent career over decades collaborated with numerous musicians. His first concert was at his father’s funeral in 1964 and then there was no looking back for the rising musical star. Slowly, Khan’s fame grew to such an extent that even Bollywood and Hollywood came calling. In the 1980s, Khan moved westward and performed in England in 1985. He has also called “Elvis” by music icon Jeff Buckley, who said Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was one of his biggest influences. To honour him he often performed few minutes of Khan’s songs at his concerts. Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan died of a cardiac arrest at the age of 49 on 16 August, 1997 in London, at the peak of his career. Here are some of his most famous qawwalis: Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Live: Akhiyaan Udeek Diyan (1993)
