A Murugadoss’ Akira starring Sonakshi Sinha has been in the pipeline for a while now. Akira is the Hindi remake of the Tamil film Mouna Guru, and it will also star Konkona Sen Sharma and Mithun Chakraborty.

We first heard of the film two years ago when Sinha started to train rigorously in MMA (mixed martial arts) for the film. It was shelved for a while, during which time Sonakshi went on to sign other films, like Force 2  and  Noor. However, the release date for Akira has now been confirmed as 2 September, reveals this ANI report.

Sonakshi took to Twitter to reveal her first look for the film:

So what do we know about Akira?

Straight off the bat, the movie looks like an action drama, and Sonakshi is said to be playing a feisty character who has to prove herself in a sea of misunderstanding. The film is said to have a strong message about the safety of women.

The tamil film Mouna Guru follows a college going boy who gets involved in a crime plot and his life turns completely topsy turvy as a result. The film is being produced by Fox Star Studios in India.

According to this Mumbai Mirror report , Konkona Sen Sharma plays the role of a cop in Akira and will be seen in an opposing role to Sonakshi. The makers had earlier considered Tabu for the role. The film has been shot in Mumbai, Pune and Rajasthan.

This is Murugadoss and Sonakshi’s second collaboration after 2014’s Holiday with Akshay Kumar. With Akira and Force 2 later in the year, Sonakshi will be doing two action films, which is a break from her earlier roles.

“I think it just happened. It is not something that I have consciously tried. I just think that the roles that came to me were really good and I felt that I could pull off or carry it off and also look convincing while doing this action,” said Sonakshi to IANS.

Akira was scheduled to release on 23 Sept, and clash with Ayushmann Khurrana and Bhumi Pednekar starrer Manmarziyaan, but will now release earlier.
