Ghostbusters: Jason Reitman to direct sequel to original 1984 film; Sony aims for summer 2020 release

Sony Pictures is developing the next installment in the Ghostbusters franchise and have finalised Jason Reitman as the director, reports Variety. Jason’s father Ivan had helmed the first two Ghostbusters films. Jason has even developed and co-written the screenplay along with Gil Kenan. The shoot for the feature may begin in summer 2019 with Sony Pictures planning a summer 2020 release. There is, however, no confirmation on whether the original cast members will be brought back on screen as the precise story details are being kept under wraps. There are reports that Reitman has begun auditioning teenagers for four mystery roles in his upcoming feature. Montecito Pictures is backing the project. Jason Reitman and Sony Pictures enter into the Ghostbusters arena with an already-strong bond after the studio’s endorsement of Reitman’s The Front Runner. Interestingly, despite the Ghostbusters reboot’s dismal performance both commercially and critically, the franchise remains a top priority for the production house. The report also added that the studio had tried its level best to keep news related to the new Ghostbusters features under wraps, even giving the fake title of Rust City to the project to avert media gaze.
