Since news that Razak Khan had passed away, after suffering a cardiac arrest, was confirmed on Wednesday, tributes for the veteran Bollywood comic actor have been pouring in. (Read it here on Firstpost.) [caption id=“attachment_2812334” align=“alignleft” width=“380”] Razak Khan as Manikchand in Baadshah (1999)[/caption] Razak, was seen on the TV show Nukkad, before making his big screen debut in 1995 with Roop Ki Rani, Choron Ka Raja. He appeared in a string of films — hits and flops — but the roles best connected with him were that of Takkar Pehelwan in Akhiyon Se Goli Maare, Ninja Chacha in Hello Brother and Manikchand in Baadshah. Razak may not have been the ‘sidekick’ on screen more often than not, but he was effective, especially when working with other actors known to have great comic timing, like Govinda and Johnny Lever. Here’s a look at some of his best known comedy roles: In Abbas-Mustan’s Baadshah (1999), Shah Rukh Khan and Johnny Lever led the laughter brigade. But as Manikchand, Razak Khan too had his moment in the spotlight. Part of a plan to kidnap a wealthy businessman’s child for ransom — and some diamonds he happens to have in his possession — Manikchand is bested by Baadshah (SRK), but not before he shows off his unique sartorial style.
Incidentally, it was with yet another ’99 film — Hello Brother (Salman Khan, Arbaaz Khan, Rani Mukherjee) — that had Razak in a role he is widely remembered for. “Ninja Chacha” may not have been central to the plot, but the eccentric character and weird mannerisms worked with audiences.
With Govinda, Razak teamed up frequently; and films in which he was seen alongside veteran comedians like Asrani, Kader Khan, and Deven Verma were among his best.
The man may be no more, but the laughter will stay on.
