Fashion Police: How 2025 is going to be all about the fusion of heritage & modernity

Remember how Kareena Kapoor wore gown made of used Banarasi saree last year? Kareena’s viral Banarasi gown was made of pre-loved saree which was restored by designer Amit Aggarwal. The actor styled it with some antic jewellery and a bindi adding class and heritage to her style.

One trend that has gained prominence in 2024 and will continue to flourish in 2025 is the fusion of heritage and modernity. Consumers are gravitating toward designs that weave traditional craftsmanship with contemporary aesthetics, creating a timeless appeal.

Relaxed tailoring has emerged as a defining trend in 2024, and it beautifully blends comfort with sophistication. Rahul Khanna, co-founder, Rohit Gandhi Rahul Khanna says, “At Rohit Gandhi & Rahul Khanna, we’ve embraced this shift through tailored pieces with softer, more fluid fits that still exude sharpness and elegance. Quiet luxury, has always been at the heart of Shanti Banaras. It’s not just fashion; it’s a legacy. Khushi Shah, creative director, Shanti Banaras says, “For us, it’s about showcasing the richness of our heritage through real zari sarees that speak volumes without saying too much.”

These sarees represent the pinnacle of craftsmanship—subtle, timeless, and truly luxurious. Khushi Shah explains, “In 2024, we saw a deep appreciation for this understated elegance, and as we step into 2025, we believe this trend will continue to resonate with those who value authenticity and quality over trends.”

Shimmer has traditionally been associated with occasional wear, but in 2024, we began to reimagine it through a more casual lens. Designer Anavila Misra says, “Its versatility in expression, with subtle explorations that work across different settings, has become a key theme. Through Payanam, our festive collection, we introduced softer, more homely and warm shimmer pieces that make the wearer feel special in a unique way, these pieces blend seamlessly into our linen sarees and hand-spun silk garments, making them perfect for both casual and festive occasions.”

Anavila explains, how this evolution reflects that shimmer is no longer confined to traditional zari textiles or heavily embellished pieces—it’s now becoming more relaxed and suitable for everyday wear. She adds, “As we look ahead to 2025, we will continue to explore how shimmer can add depth and elegance to our designs, while maintaining the effortless charm and mindful approach that defines Anavila.”

Pearls have been a timeless symbol of elegance, and in 2024, we saw them take on a contemporary twist across fashion. Pearls offer incredible versatility—they seamlessly blend with traditional Indian wear while elevating modern silhouettes.

Designer Arpita Mehta says, **“**We incorporated pearls into our designs, through intricate embroidery, adding a subtle yet striking touch of sophistication. As we look ahead to 2025, this trend will continue to shine, redefining luxury with its understated charm and versatility.”
