In an EXCLUSIVE conversation with Firstpost, Guy Ritchie’s Young Sherlock’s showrunner Matthew Parkhill talks about the working with the brilliant director. He says how Guy Ritchie is one of the most liberating producers he has ever worked with. Matthew loves Aaamir Khan’s Lagaan and would love to come to India and do something.
Edited excerpts from the: interview:
As a show-runner, what was the whole idea behind Young Sherlock and how did it come into being?
I got approached by a friend of mine who is the producer of the show. He asked me if I would be interested in this. My interest was trying to explore the question of what makes Sherlock Holmes Sherlock Holmes. There have been so many adaptations of the material that I wanted to do it differently. I was trying to explore the question of what he was like before he became Sherlock Holmes. That was the genesis of the project and the beginning point… How does he become the man that he becomes?
What was your experience of working with Guy Ritchie? Understanding him and working with him as a team?
I didn’t know what to expect. He is extremely wonderful and liberating as a writer. He’s a director who’s very much in the moment. He gets his ideas and energies from the sets. It’s quite intense. On day one, I realised that how liberating it is to work with him. The energy of his work actually comes for me as a result of that play. You feel that in his work, there’s a certain sense of effervescence. It’s all a result of that. The ability to play in the moment.
How did you go about reinventing young Sherlock?
It’s quite funny actually. I am not sure if I have re invented the Young Sherlock. In my head, there was no young Sherlock. For me, I wanted to focus on the backstory and what was he like before he was Sherlock. It was also trying to step out of the shadow. There is a lot of pressure of expectations on your shoulders. You have to come up with a way to find freedom to be able to write something that is completely refreshing.
Have you watched any Bollywood movies?
Do you know the Bollywood movie Lagaan? I love that movie. Elizabeth (Rachel Shelley) from Lagaan is in our show. She plays the role of Mrs. Anna Tilcott. I remember watching Lagaan and loving it when it first came out. So, this actually makes me smile that Elizabeth from that movie is in our show. That’s the movie from Bollywood that I have seen and loved.
