Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna starrer Thamma continued to perform well at the box office on working days, following a huge opening day during the Diwali period. In 4 days, the folklore horror-comedy had collected Rs 71.45 crore and is set to surpass the lifetime business of AndhaDhun (Rs 74.59 crore) to emerge as Khurrana’s 5th highest grosser of all-time.
In an exclusive interview with Firstpost, the director and the captain of the ship Aditya Sarpotdar spoke about what the success of this film means to him, his favourite film in the horror-comedy universe, and the challenges of making _Thamma_.
Edited excerpts from the interview
Were you expecting such massive numbers at the box office?
We were always confident that we will have decent numbers at the box office because Stree 2 and Munjya had done really well which are a part of the same horror comedy universe. When Munjya did a business of Rs 100 crore with a smaller cast and medium budget, and it was based on a local Maharashtrian folklore, I was confident Thamma will also do the same numbers or even more. And so far we have crossed more than 130 crore.
How did the casting of Thamma happen?
All the actors immediately said yes because they found the scripture really unique. It was a challenge for Rashmika because she was found full fledged action.
One horror comedy from the universe you wish you had directed
Apart from Munjya and Thamma, this universe also has Stree, Bhediya, and Stree 2. And my favorite from the universe is Stree. Since it was the origin of the horror- comedy universe, I would have loved to do that.
Was there any specific challenge you feel you had during the making of Thamma?
The most challenging part of making this film was the time that we took, due to the level of CGI. This was a film that was announced last Diwali. So this is the time that we have taken to complete it. So it was very important for me to get all the elements right and it looks like a world class production. We did not want the audience to wait and lose the hype post Munjya and Stree 2. And there was a lot of demands from the audiences to see what is next from the universe.
