The two were reportedly even shooting for the film in Cuba. The film includes credits to Glover's character, Childish Gambino, which he created while making his videos. The credits state that Guava Island is "A Childish Gambino Film". The film has been directed by Glover's longtime collaborator Hiro Murai. The two have previously collaborated on Donald's FX show Atlanta and on the artiste's videos titled, 'This Is America' and 'Sober'.

The footage depicts both Glover and Rihanna while they dwell in an apparently idyllic set up which ultimately turns out to be a lie. Glover delivers a potent line in the trailer when he says “We live in paradise but none of us actually have the time or the means to live here.” Guava Island also features Letitia Wright and Nonso Anozie.

Glover recently announced that his current This Is America tour would be his last as Childish Gambino.
