Filmmaker Vikram Bhatt and his wife Shwetambari Bhatt have been taken to judicial custody in connection with a Rs. 30 crore fraud case. Their interim bail plea on medical grounds was rejected on Tuesday. They were sent to Udaipur Central Jail by a court in Udaipur.
Earlier, the couple sought an interim bail on medical grounds. Advocate Manzoor Hussain told ANI, “The lawyer for the accused presented an application for interim bail, requesting that it be granted on medical grounds. If interim bail is granted before the court session ends, both individuals could be released for a short period to receive medical treatment. Everything depends on the court’s order.” However, it was rejected by the court.
The couple had been in police custody since early December following their arrest by Rajasthan Police on December 7 in Mumbai. Both were initially placed in police remand for seven days from December 9 before the remand period ended, and they were subsequently produced before the Udaipur court.
The case stems from a complaint filed by Dr Ajay Murdia, founder of Indira IVF, who alleges that the Bhatts and several others defrauded him of approximately ₹30 crore in the name of producing multiple films, including a proposed biopic. According to earlier reports, the complaint states that the funds were collected with promises of large returns and high-profile projects, but alleged agreements and production plans were not fulfilled.
Vikram Bhatt has publicly denied the allegations, calling the FIR “misleading” and claiming that he will cooperate with the investigation. He has said that any unfinished aspects of the project were due to misunderstandings or halted by the complainant, and insisted that he has documentation to support his claims.
