Deepika's narrow escape from rotten eggs, tomatoes
A PIL has been filed at the Gujarat High Court by the Kutch Kathiawad Garasiya Association and another by a lawyer called Siddhrajsinh Chudasama demanding a ban on Ram Leela.
In India, protest has turned into an industry of sorts, singeing chief ministers and Valentine's Day cards alike. The latest victim of our country's worthy alternative to unemployment is actor Deepika Padukone. Her fault? Is she being belatedly pulled up for calling Siddharth Mallya 'charming and intelligent'? Is she being taken down a peg or two for constantly looking gorgeous? Actually, she has irked people for acting in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Ram Leela.
According to a report in DNA, the Darbar community of Rajputs in Gujarat have taken umbrage to a fictional character's (played by Deepika) "vulgar" ways. You might have noticed in the Ram Leela trailers that she is seen cosying up to her partner - an obviously 'vulgar' action that exists only in Bollywood love stories and is surely never replicated in real life, real India or among the Darbar community.
A PIL has been filed at the Gujarat High Court by the Kutch Kathiawad Garasiya Association and another by a lawyer called Siddhrajsinh Chudasama, demanding a ban on the film. DNA reports:
“The director and producer have been totally insensitive not only to the Darbar (Rajput) community but to the Hindu religion as a whole. The title of the movie — Galiyon Ki Ras Leela, Ram Leela — depicts Lord Ram in a negative role. The title, used in a provocative manner, hurts Hindu sentiments and promotes vulgarity,” said the petitioner. The PIL added that the character of a Darbar girl, portrayed by Deepika Padukone, is shown abusing and indulging in vulgar manners which has also hurt the tradition and sentiments of the Rajputs."
And more recently, reports Mid-Day, while Deepika was on a promotional tour to Ahmedabad, a clutch of very righteous Jadeja and Rajbari community people turned up with eggs and tomatoes. Not because they were planning a Deepika-spotting picnic, but because they were planning to pelt them at the actress. Of course, no need to raise questions about a group of zealous culture hawks who feel offended by the sight of a woman pursuing a man with zest, but think nothing of assaulting a woman.
