Aaj se pehle jo hua nahi hoga (what hasn’t been done before today). Deepika is busy with Padmavati. Once she is done with that, she will get involved in this film wholeheartedly. Now we are at the music stage but yes everything is getting ready. I think by January 15, we will start shooting,” said Prernaa Arora of Kriarj Entertainment, according to a
Bollywood Hungama
report. Sapna Didi is based on journalist-turned-author S Hussain Zaidi’s popular book Mafia Queens of Mumbai, and Padukone will be essaying the role of the protagonist, Rahima Khan (Sapna Didi) in the movie. Portrayed as a simple woman turned into an out-an-out don from the 80s, Padukone’s character Rahima sets out to avenge the murder of her husband by promising to kill Dawood Ibrahim (in real life, Ibrahim apparently got heed of
Rahima’s plan and killed her days before
she set her scheme in motion). Irrfan Khan
will be playing a local gangster
, doubling up as Padukone’s love interest. Khan will be seen helping and Padukone avenge her husband’s death. The character that Khan will be seen portraying was allegedly a womaniser who lusted after Sapna Didi, but showed a lot of character and loyalty while he helped and trained Rahima in her quest. It will be interesting to see Khan’s acting chops translating all this onto the silver screen. Padukone and Khan have previously been paired together in the successful movie
Piku
, which also starred Amitabh Bachchan. This is not the first time that Padukone will be seen in the role of a character that has major negative shades. The actor has taken on badass roles in movie such as
xXx: Return of Xander Cage
,
Ram Leela
and
Bajirao Mastani
in the past. Irrfan Khan too has had his share of characters dabbling with negative shades, having won the Filmfare award for Best Villain for Haasil, and also essaying roles with shades of grey in Maqbool and Saath Khoon Maaf. Sapna Didi might be looking at a
2 October, 2018 release.
