Daddy, Poster Boys, Logan Lucky, It, Yuddham Sharanam: Reviews of the Week

Every Friday, we wonder which film could we should watch on the weekend, and this can be a tough decision, considering the sheer number of films that release! The next thing we do is type in the movie’s name and search for reviews, to see what people have to say about them. That might sound like a simple, ‘figured-the-easy-way-out’ kind of solution, but it is far from it. Reviewers can be cryptic, to say the least. While one says that a film is extraordinary and gives it a 4-star rating, others may not stop calling it names or worse, trash it entirely. To solve this problem, here is a list of all the films that release this weekend, along with excerpts from decisive reviews written by Firstpost’s critics. Daddy

“Daddy demands patient viewing as it sets out to explore a new story delivery style while tackling the ever-popular gangster genre. As it walks the fine line between judgement and glorification, Daddy often feels like a bunch of headlines stitched together with fine handwriting, managing to suck you back into a time that has shaped modern Mumbai.” Rating: 3/5 Read the full review here . Poster Boys

“Poster__Boys is the perfect example of the second half curse. While it jumps straight into the story line in the first half, the second half is just a quagmire of every random plot point possible. It bites off much more than it can chew. From a legal and media battle against the state, forced comic situations and random references to past Sunny and Bobby Deol films, the narrative goes for a toss. The film ends up neutralising the grave subject that its premise aims to bring forth. Though the narrative regains shape in the climax and also entails effective cameos from the Golmaal Again team and Sachin Khedekar, it is too late by that time. The audience gives up on the film by the point it starts making sense again, which is just a sign of weak filmmaking by a debutante director who lacks the technical acumen to shoulder a film with a promising premise.” Rating: 2/5 Read the full review here . It

“When first class story material meets first class execution, you get films like Andy Muschietti’s It. Not only is It a highly entertaining horror movie, it’s also the rare movie that makes you crave a sequel. If you have even a remote interest in having a blast at the cinema with your pals, go and watch this movie before even reading the rest of this review. It may not be the best Stephen King adaptation (that trophy goes to Misery), but it’s a still a very good one. It’s also a good sign for the horror genre that It is well received critically and commercially because it would get more studios to invest more money in the genre.” Rating: 4/5 Read the full review here . Logan Lucky

“If the Oceans films had giant budgets and extra polished sheen, Logan Lucky is the grimy, smart-ass brother, and even if it doesn’t do too well in cinemas, it’s bound to find cult status on streaming platforms. Soderbergh has attempted something unique by bypassing studio norms and gaining total control over the film — during the film’s weaker moments hard-boiled cinema buffs would stop to wonder if Soderbergh bit off more than he could chew. There is after all a studio system in place simply because it works more often than not.” Rating: 4/5 Read the full review here . Yuddham Sharanam

“The biggest issue with Yuddham Sharanam is that it doesn’t give the chance to the audience to discover anything. The suspense of the film is its premise, which is revealed in the opening scene, and from there onwards, it becomes a question of time and how long will Arjun take to face off against his nemesis. We begin to see the proceedings unfold from Arjun’s perspective, but his journey to reach the goal feels too laborious, even though most part of the story unfolds in 24 hours. This is a tale of corrupt politicians, a dreaded gangster and his network, of cops trying to decipher clues although they seem to be way off the track. Quite frankly, you can’t engage the audience when there’s no puzzle to decipher as the story itself reveals everything in its opening act.” Rating: 2.75/5 Read the full review here .
