'Controll' Movie Review: Thakur Anoop Singh & Rohit Roy starrer cyber crime thriller is powerful & captivating

Star cast: Thakur Anoop Singh, Rohit Roy & Priya Anand

Director: Safdar Abbas

In a digital era where personal data and online transactions are increasingly vulnerable, Controll dares to tackle the subject of cybercrime — a theme that’s as urgent as it is underexplored in Indian cinema. Directed by Safdar Abbas, the film blends emotional drama with a cyber-thriller framework. While its intentions are noble and timely, the final result is uneven.

At the heart of the story is Abhimanyu (Thakur Anoop Singh), an Indian soldier whose family is shattered when his brother-in-law becomes a victim of a cyber scam and subsequently takes his own life. The incident propels Abhimanyu on a quest for truth and justice, leading him deep into the web of digital deceit.

The film’s strength lies in its topical relevance. Cyber fraud is a growing menace, and Controll does well to shed light on how devastating its consequences can be — not just financially, but emotionally and psychologically. The narrative avoids sensationalism and instead chooses a more grounded, personal perspective, which helps maintain credibility.

However, where Controll falters is in its narrative cohesion. The screenplay, while promising in the first act, struggles to maintain tension throughout. Certain plot developments feel rushed or underdeveloped, and the emotional stakes, though clear, lack the complexity needed to fully resonate.

Thakur Anoop Singh delivers a sincere performance, portraying quiet grief and determination with restraint. Rohit Roy, as the antagonist, adds subtlety and nuance to an otherwise straightforward character. The supporting cast — including Priya Anand, Rajesh Sharma, and Denzil Smith — offer competent support but are not given much space to shine.

On the technical front, the film features tight editing and adequate cinematography, but suffers from a bland background score and some inconsistencies in lighting design that undermine dramatic moments.

In conclusion, Controll is a well-meaning film with a socially relevant message, but it doesn’t always rise to the potential of its premise. It’s a decent watch — especially for viewers interested in tech-driven narratives — but it stops just short of being truly gripping.
