The movies that released on 6 October have proved that in some cases, the reputation of being headlined by a star can either work for a particular film, or have no considerable effect at all. Saif Ali Khan’s Chef, arguably the biggest Bollywood film to release on Friday, made a little over Rs 1 crore. This is despite critics applauding Khan’s performance in the film.

It opened in 1570 screens across the country. Its poor performance at the box office may be credited to the average reviews it received; most critics pointed out that it was touted as a food film, but there were too few close-up shots of any dishes.

Dulquer Salmaan’s Solo was praised because of lead actor Dulquer Salmaan’s performance, but critics pointed out that a needless contrivance was used to link its individual four parts. The film made more than Rs 3.3 crore on its opening day. Reports state that the average theatre occupancy was 99.52 percent in the city of Kochi. David Dhawan’s action-comedy film Judwaa 2, a reboot of the 1997 Salman Khan-starrer Judwaa, has crossed the Rs 100 crore mark in eight days since its release, the makers have said. Released on 29 September, the movie, starring Varun Dhawan, Jacqueline Fernandez and Taapsee Pannu in the lead, minted Rs 4.25 crore on Friday, thus taking its cumulative total to Rs 102.33 crore. Judwaa 2 has now earned Rs 157.69 crore worldwide, read a statement issued on behalf of the makers. It received average reviews, just like Chef, but the combined star power of Varun Dhawan, Jacqueline Fernandez, Taapsee Pannu and Salman Khan and the fact that it is a remake could be the possible reason why it has continued to perform well at the box office.
