The problem with making remakes of the Hindi films of the eighties is that many of them were imminently forgettable. But then there are the classics that we hold onto dearly and defend strongly, and David Dhawan stepped into that hallowed territory when he picked by Sai Paranjape’s Chashme Baddoor to remake.
But if the first trailer of film is to be believed, Dhawan might not have done an entirely bad job of remaking the film which seems to have a dash of colours, a generous dose of funny couplets and a lot of song and dance, and laughs.
There is a certain ease in the way the film seems to break into funny punchlines, hilarious situations and crazy song-dance sequences, which hint that the film might just be fun.
The actors seem to do their bits perfectly. Divyendu Sharma of the Pyaar Ka Punchnama fame slips perfectly into the role of a compulsive womanizer, with one liners constantly on the tip of his lips. Siddharth makes a transition from his last outing in Bollywood as a brooding character in Rang De Basanti’s to an obsessive film buff. Ali Zafar looks comfortable and confident as he plays the ‘Sedha Ladka’ , a mamma’s boy and geek with funky glasses.
Taapsee Pannu makes her Bollywood debut with this film. In the trailer she comes across as bubbly and spunky. Rishi Kapoor too makes an appearance as a foot tapping dancer and a biker.
The original film, directed by Sai Paranjpe, tells the story of three friends who fall in love with the same girl and the confusion that ensues. Farooq Sheikh, Deepti Naval, Rakesh Bedi and the late Ravi Baswani charmed moviegoers in a memorable film that was laced with subtle humour.
While Dhawan’s remake is based on the same story, his humour seems more in your face and his film comes across as a louder version of the original. Will this mean more entertainment for movie goers or only make a hash of the original, will be revealed on 5th April, when Chasme Baddoor hits screens.
But for now, watch the trailer of the film here and tell us what you think:
