Sony's latest inter-genre thriller BrightBurn seems to have ticked all the right boxes. The otherwise conventional superhero origin story has been given a special treatment to include elements of horror. BrightBurn features Elizabeth Banks and David Denman who play a couple 'gifted' with a child after years of trying. The gift seems to obviously have non-human origins. The sudden crash landing of the infant may remind viewers something akin to Kal-El/Superman.

However, not everything is hunky-dory. Banks is heard explaining to her son that he is 'different' while he profusely sketches odd designs on his books. He often depicts himself in a red cape, in a superhero avatar. However, James Gunn's treatment with the narrative is what's interesting. He leaves the audience wondering where exactly the misfit child heads. Gunn is one of the creative forces behind the film.

BrightBurn is directed by David Yarovesky, his best works include ones like short film Hell Hath No Fury and 2015's sci-fi horror The Hive. The supporting cast includes actors Jackson A. Dunn, Matt Jones, and Meredith Hagner.

BrightBurn marks James Gunn's first film post his exit as director from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3.

BrightBurn is scheduled to hit the theatres in May, 2019. Watch the trailer here.
