Raveena Tandon completed 25 years in the Hindi film industry last year and she is ready to give the current crop of leading ladies a run for their money in her next film, Ashtar Sayed’s revenge saga Maatr. It is a film that addresses the issue of violence against women, which is why Tandon considered it her social and creative responsibility to associate with this film. YouTube[/caption] Tandon has acted in a diverse range of films in the past 25 years but she admits that Maatr remains special since it’s about motherhood, a feeling that she was blessed with way back in 1995. She adopted two girls, Pooja and Chhaya and raised them in the capacity of a single mother. They were 11 and eight years old then respectively. After marrying renowned film distributor Anil Thadani in 2004, she gave birth to Rasha in 2005 and Ranbir in 2007. A mother of four, Tandon cherishes the feeling of motherhood. “The moment when a crying infant is put into your arms, your whole world changes," she says. Tandon has also acted as the Chairperson of the Children’s Film Society of India from 2003 to 2005. All these reasons must have been instrumental in her signing Maatr, a film that revolves around an angry and revengeful mother whose daughter has been attacked. Tandon believes that it is all the more important to convey such a story in the contemporary times, given countless episodes of rape and abuse against women. “It is about a mother’s emotion towards her children. Looking at the scary world today, all you want to do is protect your child,” she says. This is not her first tryst with films that spread awareness about women abuse. She won a National Award for her portrayal of a domestic abuse victim in the 2002 film Daman: A Victim of Marital Violence. Maatr also stars Madhur Mittal and Rushad Rana. It is produced by CDB Musical Production and is slated to release on 21 April.
