Even as his Toilet: Ek Prem Katha readies for release, yet another Akshay Kumar-film-with-a-social-message is in the news. The first look poster of Padman was released by Team Akshay on Twitter, and began trending within minutes of being unveiled. Padman is directed by R Balki.

The poster depicts Akshay — dressed in a simple linen trouser and pants combination — bicycling along what seem to be the ghats of Varanasi or Haridwar, a stainless steel tiffin slung on the handlebars.

Akshay has his arms raised, as though celebrating a triumph, and above his head, the film's title is spelled out: Padman.

Padman, based on a short story written by Akshay's wife Twinkle Khanna, follows the real-life achievements of Arunachalam Muruganantham. Muruganantham is noted for creating low cost sanitary napkins that have eased the experience of menstruation for several hundred Indian women, especially those living in rural areas. Khanna had created a partially fictionalised account of Muruganantham's journey in her book, The Legend of Lakshmi Prasad. A similar story formed the premise of the recently release film Phullu.

Apart from Padman and Toilet, Akshay was also in the news for winning the 'Most Beautiful Man of the Decade' at the Vogue Beauty Awards 2017. Accepting his trophy on stage, the actor read out a speech prepared by Twinkle that read:

"They says that beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder but I say beauty is whoever lets you hold her. I would like to thank Vogue for this award. To my overpaid trainer and my underpaid cook, a big thank you for helping me maintain this beautiful Man of the Decade Body which I have. A part of the credit should also go to the fact that I did not have to carry my two children for nine whole months and thus my stomach did not have to stretch to elephantine proportions and then deflate to a small paunch with stretch marks and side skin that no amount of dieting can eradicate. So I’m eternally grateful to my wife for sacrificing her own vanity and producing our wonderful children and saving me from ruining my figure which would’ve ruined my chances of winning this award. Before I leave I’d like to thank my beautiful talented wife and all the support to getting her to write this speech as if she had nothing better to do tonight."

Padman releases on 13 April 2018.
