The CBFC has agreed to clear Naam Shabana with a U/A if they agree to make these three rather absurd cuts.

Shivam Nair’s upcoming action thriller Naam Shabana has been cleared with a U/A certificate and 3 cuts by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

The CBFC objected to three scenes from the film and instructed the makers to do away with them. Firstly, they had a contention with a domestic abuse scene. Hindustan Times reports that the board were of the opinion that hitting a woman is not permissible under any circumstances. While the intent behind the same may be well meaning but since the protagonist of the film, played by Taapsee Pannu is a secret agent, the idea of surfing through the film unscathed seems implausible.

But the same report states that the CBFC clarified that the context of their demand was that of domestic abuse. They even claimed that it would have been impossible on their part if they had to certify films on domestic abuse today, such as Deepa Mehta’s 2009 Canadian film Heaven on Earth or Jagmohan Mundra’s British biopic Provoked.

DNA reports that the second cut that the CBFC instructed was that of a liquor bottle. While disclaimers of the harmful effects of drinking and smoking are mandatory occurrences on the silver screen, the Board went several notches higher in this film by asking the makers to remove the liquor bottle from the screen.

The third cut demanded by the Board is that of a Santa-Banta joke. They claimed that ridiculing a community, the Sikh community in this case, is not allowed, irrespective of how sporting the humour attached with it is. Last month, the Supreme Court refrained from regulating Santa-Banta jokes on social media as they found it unfeasible and unfit to impose guidelines related to humour. But it seems like the CBFC is taking matters into its own hands.

Naam Shabana also stars Akshay Kumar, Anupam Kher, Danny Danzongpa, Prithviraj and Manoj Bajpayee. It is produced by Neeraj Pandey and is a spin-off of his 2015 directorial Baby. It is slated to release on 31 March.
