Danny Denzongpa's car seized by RTO amid a mass crackdown over tax evasion
Danny Denzongpa's Range Rover was registered in Sikkim and was thus, seized by the RTO for evading tax since Maharashtra charges a higher tax rate on cars.

The Regional Transport Office conducted tax raids on 441 owners of luxury cars, including veteran actor Danny Denzongpa, whose Range Rover was seized from Andheri West in Mumbai on Wednesday. The car was released on Thursday morning after the actor paid a fine of Rs 29,56, 230, informs our source from Firstpost Hindi.
The drive was started on 14 January in which the officials kept a tab on the number plates of luxury cars travelling on the roads of Mumbai. The cars registered in a state other than Maharashtra were stopped and investigated.
Mumbai Mirror reports that Maharashtra charges one of the highest tax rates on luxury cars, ranging from 10 per cent to 12 per cent. Thus, the users prefer to register their cars in other states and use them in Maharashtra in order to evade taxes. For example, the tax payable on a luxury car registered in Puducherry and Jharkhand, is Rs 25,000 at the most whereas 10% of the total cost would be payable in the event of the car being registered in Maharashtra.

The focus areas of the raid are posh localities like Bandra, Carter Road, Juhu and Andheri West. In addition to these residential areas and various upscale hotels of Mumbai, both the domestic and international airport in Santacruz and Andheri respectively are being scanned for the presence of such high-end cars that are not registered in Maharashtra.
As far as Denzongpa's car is concerned, it was registered in his home state of Sikkim. While there is no statement from the actor yet, it is confirmed that he has paid the price of evading tax intentionally or otherwise.
