Batman vs Superman trailer leaked: Zack Snyder manages to make superheroes snooze worthy
We, who have loved these DC Comics superheroes for decades now are still hopeful that when the official promo finally releases it will be longer and better than this leaked video.
You've got to wonder if filmmaker Zack Snyder has finally lost the plot? A trailer for his upcoming film Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice has been leaked and instead of giving us tingles of excitement, it's managed to push anticipation for this multi-starrer to sub-zero levels.
Snyder was expected to officially release the trailer three days later. However, he screened the trailer of the film starring Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Ben Affleck and Gal Gadot at IMAX for a special audience. Someone in that audience, with horrible camera skills, decided to video it for the greater good and put Superman and Batman fans out of their misery. The YouTube links have, predictably, been attacked by producers Warner Bros, but the trailer's out (Watch it here) and there's not much that Warner Bros can do about it now.
So what does the trailer for Batman vs Superman tell us? That it's going to look like a montage of shots from past Superman and Batman films, for starters. Superman picking up a car: check. Batman glowering moodily at his suit: check. Superman hovering in a stormy sky: check.
Snyder has set the film in a dark world, which we mean in literal terms. Of course the visibility is affected by the fact that the trailer we're seeing is pirated, but in the two minutes that we spend in the Batman vs Superman world, most of the time is spent wishing we had a torch to point at things. The premise of the film appears to be that Batman decides to take on Superman, who's being called a "False God". Affleck as Batman has a gravelly, artificial voice that sounds garbled and snarly. On the plus side, Hendry Cavill continues to look as beautiful as ever. Thank god.
You're supposed to feel the chills when the two superheroes face off. Superman is supposed to be the evil force and Batman is the protector of the earthly and downtrodden. Batman asks Superman, "Tell me, do you bleed?" Before Superman can answer, Batman promises, "You will." This would be a whole lot more tense if everyone didn't know that Superman has been bashed about by baddies in the past, so yes, Batman, he does bleed. But he also lifts cars and looks gorgeous, which is more than can be said for Mr. Blue Eyes (Affleck's Batman has glowing blue eyes in this new version).
Snyder himself had mentioned the film on his Twitter timeline and here's what his teaser showed: the Superman suit, the Batsuit, Superman's logo and Batman's logo. Not exactly the kind of promo that is likely to leave fans in an excited puddle. The leaked trailer isn't much better sadly. For those who have loved DC Comics's superheroes for decades, let's hope this leaked video looks and sounds better in HD. Better yet, let's hope it's meant to lower expectations instead of raising them. Meanwhile, you're probably better off watching the trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice will hit the screens on 25 March, 2016. Its trailer is expected on 20 April, 2016.
