Bairaava, VIP 2, Mariyappan: First day of 2017 saw many Tamil film trailers, posters and songs

Traditionally Tamil cinema’s big ticket films used to announce new ventures or their release date on January 1 every year, through print ads. Things have since changed with the advent of social media. From December 31 night to January 1 evening, there were a series of first looks, posters, trailers, songs and new film announcements in Kollywood. Here are a few that caught our attention. Ilayathalapathy Vijay’s Pongal release Bairaava launched its trailer at December 31 by 10 pm and in 24 hours it clocked 3.5 million views. Fans went crazy watching the slick action comedy’s trailer.

On New Year’s eve, Dhanush launched the first look poster of his VIP 2, which has Bollywood actress Kajol playing a crucial role. Soundarya Rajinikanth will be directing the film and Sean Roldon will be the music composer for this sequel to Dhanush’s hugely successful Velai Illa Pattathari.

Meanwhile, ace director Gautham Menon put out the song teaser of Dhanush’s Valentine’s day release Enai Nokki Paayum Thota (ENPT).  There is a huge mystery around the composer of the ‘Maru Varthai Pesathey’ song from Dhanush-Gautham Menon film, as it hasn’t been revealed yet.  To add to the mystery, Gautham tweeted –

Meanwhile, arch rival actor, singer and composer Simbu, better known as STR of the ‘beep song’ controversy, also came out with a  New Year special. STR ’s Trend Song from AAA was out on December 30 and it’s getting a good response from the actor’s ardent fans.

At the same time, Dhanush’s wife and Rajinikanth’s daughter Aishwarya Dhanush launched her next directorial venture Mariyappan. Aishwarya’s new film was announced on her birthday – January 1. Shahrukh Khan launched the first look poster via his Twitter handle. Mariyappan is a biopic on Indian Paralympic champion from Tamil Nadu. Noted director Raju Murugan will pen dialogues for the film and Sean Roldon has been roped in to compose music.

Vijay Sethupathi’s Kavan, which also has STR’s dad and veteran actor T.Rajendran in a pivotal role, came out with the ‘Happy New Year’ number from the film.

The Rangu Rakkara promo song teaser from Raghava Lawerence’s Sivalinga was also launched on January 1. Thaman has composed music for the song and Anirudh has crooned the peppy number.

Music composer turned hero GV Prakash Kumar’s Adangathey released its first look poster via Anurag Kashyap. Adangathey is being directed by Shanmugham Muthusamy, and the film also has Sarath Kumar, Surbhi and Mandira Bedi in pivotal roles.
