Arjun Kapoor’s sister Anshula recently got engaged and a lot of pictures and videos surfaced on social media. It’s indeed a happy and heartening moment for Anshula but she has also faced a lot of struggles in her personal journey, and she has spoken about it in a recent interview.
During a recent conversation with We Are Yuvaa on their The Good Girls Show podcast, Anshula Kapoor spoke about suffering from something called fatphobia. She was quoted saying, “I knew I’m fat, I’m bigger bodied. But while growing up, the more people spoke negatively about me and gave taanas, the more I would eat. Sometimes, people would think, ‘Sakht baatein karoge toh isko shock milega (Harsh words will shock her), and she will come out of it.”
She added, “They think, just because you are teasing them and calling them fat, they will be like, Oh, I have to do something about it now. Look at what the world is saying. But it doesn’t work like that.”
What is fatphobia?
‘Fatphobia’ is the “irrational fear of, aversion to, or discrimination against obesity or people with obesity” (Macmillan Dictionary). Fatphobia, while not always resulting in verbal or other criticisms, still involves an abnormal phobia of fat people and / or a general fear of fat.
Gurleen Baruah, organisational psychologist, was quoted saying by The Indian Express, “Eventually, it leads to body shaming, passing judgment or criticism, resulting in body dysmorphia, which can take a toll on a child’s mental health while growing up.”
She added, “Constant negativity and body shaming may lead to anxiety, depression, and disordered eating.”
