Arjun Kapoor and Bhumi Pednekar’s The Lady Killer was arguably the most clandestine release for a Hindi film in ages. The film that opened in cinemas on November 3 last year, had a severely limited release of merely 50 screens. A report by Bollywood Hungama said only 500 people turned up to watch it, and it collected around Rs 38,000 on day one. It’s directed by Section 375 fame Ajay Bahl.

The film is not available on any streaming platform and directly released on YouTube. And people who watched it had some good things to say about the thriller.

“It’s a good one, c’mon guys he (Arjun Kapoor) did a great job I know he gave so many flops, but this one deserves appreciation," a viewer commented.

Another viewer asked, “Is it just me who liked this movie? Thought it was a good one."

What happened?

Bollywood Hungama reports, “Over 10 days of shoot was pending, and producers decided to stall the shoot because the film was over budget. They have played smartly on the edit table to make sense of all the stuff that was shot. The film is being released only because a digital deal is locked and the same has to be delivered to their digital partner post-theatrical release.”

Reason behind the minimal release

“The OTT players are giving lucrative monies to producers. Now the contracts are signed and to get the money, the film has to be released on the big screen. The idea is to be smart on the edit by adding relevant voiceovers for missing portions and release the film to book the revenue,” a source told the portal
