Ever since Astronomer CEO Andy Byron grabbed eyeballs after being caught on the Kiss Cam having a private moment on Wednesday (July 16) with the company’s chief human resources officer, Kristin Cabot, in Boston during the Coldplay concert, the debate over dating an office colleague has sparked on social media.

While many couples in several corporate and media companies are managing to strike a chord with their professional and personal lives, it is generally not a great idea to date your colleague. Here are a few reasons to support this claim.

Since many of the companies don’t allow couples to work together or date fellow employees, either one of you has to leave the job.

Promotion & biasedness

If you both work in the same department and you get a promotion. Now, you are dating your subordinate, and it can lead to bias or sometimes even blackmail when it comes to reviewing the work.

Heighten your sense of discretion

You will need a lot of energy and concentration to make sure your office romance is just between the two of you, because if your coworkers come to know about this, you may become the subject of suspicion. It is of utmost importance for you to focus on your professional abilities.

Romance affecting your coworkers

Believe it or not, your romantic relationship with your colleague impacts directly or indirectly your coworkers as they won’t make you part of their informal conversations during the lunch break, as they might prefer not to breach the private moment between you and your partner

What if it ends badly?

If your relationship ends badly, your partner might tell HR that you were making unwanted advances.  And undoubtedly, this harassment case will not only impact your career but will also affect your mental and psychological health.
