News reports stated that the incident took place after Sharma came under a moving train while trying to disembark at Mathura Railway Station.

Sharma, a resident of Agra, was returning to Mathura where Akshay Kumar has been shooting for his film, Toilet Ek Prem Katha, for the past one month. He was part of the actor's security detail here.

Officials said that the train — which halts at Mathura for two minutes — had been running late on Monday by over an hour. Sharma attempted to alight at Platform No. 2 of Mathura Station when the train was still in motion, which resulting in him losing his balance and falling to the tracks.

Mukesh Kumar, station officer of GRP Mathura Junction was quoted by The Times of India as saying, "At around 8 pm, when Karnataka Express was passing by platform number two, Manoj attempted to alight from train which was still moving. He lost his balance and came under its wheels and died on the spot."
