Ahead of Kedarnath release, films set against backdrop of natural calamity, from Kai Po Che to The Impossible
Sara Ali Khan's debut Kedarnath, which is slated to release this Friday on 7 December is a love story, which occurs alongside the infamous floods that created havoc in Uttarakhand and other parts of India in June, 2013. In the Abhishek Kapoor directorial, Khan plays Mukku while Sushant Singh Rajput is Mansoor, two young lovers caught between social, religious divisions and the natural disaster.
There have been many films (both good and bad) set against a natural calamity in the backdrop. Here is a look at some of them.
Tum Mile (2009)
Emraan Hashmi and Soha Ali Khan star in this love story set against the July 2005 Mumbai floods, in which more than thousands of people lost their lives and brought the city to a standstill. They play former lovers stuck in the flooded road for hours at a stretch, only to realise that they were destined to be together.
The wealthy Lala Kedarnath (played by Balraj Sahni) lives with his beautiful wife and three young sons but an earthquake crumbling the town they live in leads to the scattering of his family. While his eldest son (played by Raj Kumar) grows on to become a crook, his middle son (played by Sunil Dutt) is adopted by an affluent couple and grows up to be a lawyer. His youngest son Vijay (played by Shashi Kapoor) is still with his mother but they are unable to reunite with the other members and have to live in poverty. Even though they are not united many years down the line, their lives seem to be strangely interconnected, writes IMDb.
The Impossible (2012)
Directed by JA Bayona, the film follows a family spending Christmas in Thailand. Their trip gets disrupted as they get caught in the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami, which claimed thousands of lives. Ewan McGregor, Naomi Watts, Samuel Joslin and Tom Holland star in this drama, which focuses on the survival of this family. Watts even earned an Academy Award nomination for her performance.
Kai Po Che (2013)
The buddy drama, also directed by Abhishek Kapoor, is based on Chetan Bhagat's novel The 3 Mistakes of My Life. The plot revolves around three friends with a mission to open a cricket training academy. Set against the backdrop of the Godhara train burning and the 2001 Gujarat earthquake, the film explores how their friendship is tested in an environment tinged with religious and communal violence, and made worse by a natural calamity that destroys their academy.
Disaster Movie (2008)
Like Scary Movie, Date Movie, Epic Movie and Meet The Spartans, Disaster Movie parodies scenes from popular man-made and natural disaster films in Hollywood. This film marks Kim Kardashian's debut and also features Carmen Electra in the lead.
