With two consecutive Captain Marvel movies slated to release in 2019, the DC vs Marvel rivalry is all set for a heads-on clash in the theaters, as reported by Huntington News.

However, the character of Captain Marvel has a complicated and confusing history as a result of a trademark dispute between DC and Marvel, which resulted in a legal ruling that divided the rights between the two.

In 2019, both Marvel Studios and DC Films are releasing two films with their own characters, Marvel Studio’s Captain Marvel, starring Brie Larson as Carol Danvers, who inherited the title in the comic book universe, and New Line Cinema’s (part of DC Films Banner) Shazam!, with Zachary Levi in the lead.

The two films are slated for release just one month apart. While Marvel’s film will release in March, DC’s will release in April. Fans are clearly in for a long standing, decades-long comic book world rivalry manifesting into a box office standoff.

DC and its fans have long accused Marvel of copying most of its popular superhero characters, such as Iron Man aping Batman, and The Avengers in response to the Justice League, Captain Marvel was said to be their answer to Superman. But when Captain Marvel became more popular than Superman, DC sued Marvel for copyright infringement.

Meanwhile, the Marvel Universe and DC Extended Universe continue to navigate box office clashes with two back-to-back releases in 2017 as well. Marvel's Thor: Ragnarok releases this Friday on 3 November followed by DC's first Justice League movie on 17 November.
